ONE DOWN TWO TO GO

The first game of the Trilogy of games hopefully leading to the Championship went according to Plan tonight with a 32 – 5 victory over Rhigos.

From the kick off it was pretty evident what the Birchgrove Pre Match Team talk had consisted of tonight, three words -ATTACK, ATTACK. ATTACK !

Within five minutes Liam Richards had powered over for the first try 5 – 0. This was closely followed by a well-constructed move involving Kyle Evans and Josh Key before Jordon Williams crossed for try number two 10- 0.

Rhigos were playing their part too and a strong scrum and some loose handling from the home team were allowing them also to throw the ball around and their number 14 was looking particularly sharp. They reaped their reward after 20 minutes when a swift counter attack gained good field position allowing their forwards to do the “donkey work” and drive over for a try 10 -5.

Birch were next to strike and a catch and drive operation put Tom Downing in for a 15 -5 lead at half time.

Rhigos kicked off and were straight on the offensive but the industrious Dai Cullen and Liam Richards were snapping up any loose ball and making the hard yards back in to Rhigos territory. From a staging point near the visitors line Stephen George was the carrier this time to go over for the bonus try 20 -5.

Dai Cullen was the next to benefit after good work from Ricky Rosser, Luke Williams and Tom Downing had created another bridgehead and on this occasion Ricky Rosser was successful with the conversion 27 – 5.

The game continued at quite a pace with both sides prepared to throw the ball around but with the game secure it was no surprise that Birchgrove were to round things off with their sixth try and a final score 32-5.

So the season trundles on, Birch now just 1 point behind the leaders Glais with a game in hand. The mathematical conundrums continue to stretch the supporters grey matter but there is only one sure way of getting across the Championship line- More of the same !!!

Alltwen next at home Saturday 30th April 2.30 followed by the final game at Bridgend Sports Sat 7th May.

Good luck boys !!

I will be away for next week’s game but will try to get the score posted for our Overseas readers.
