TWO FROM TWO ! NOT A BAD START

It doesn’t get much better than this. A local Derby, A new Kit , a lush green pasture lovingly cultivated by grounds man Martin Evans and a bonus point 24. 0 victory . Is there any more to say ?

Well yes there is as another great team effort following the opening victory of the season against Nantymoel filled the following faithful and I would say the whole team with some confidence that something special may be bubbling away at Birchgrove

Straight out of the stocks, Birch put the visitors under pressure and although uncharacteristically losing a couple of line outs the home side remained in the ascendancy. It was no surprise therefore that following some energetic forward exchanges which left the visiting defence in some disarray as the ball fell to dazzling No 10 Adam Rowlands on the half way line that something was in the wind. In a carbon copy of his jinking run at Nantymoel he reduced the Morriston defence to absolute rubble as he waltzed through from 50 yards to claim the first try  which he also converted 7.0

With the Birchgrove scrum in complete command and Morriston on the back foot the home side continued to press with runs from Lee Harris, Leigh Di’lulio and Callum Llewellyn going close. Territory was at this stage being completely dominated by the rampant home team and having secured a foothold close to the visitor’s line a trademark flipped pass from the base of the scrum by Josh Key  left debut making scrum half Bobby Scrine in sight of the line. With a few moves which would be appreciated by tonight’s “Strictly Squad” he was over for try No 2. Rowlands again on target 14.0

A shell shocked Morriston tried to regroup and after fully 20 minutes of the game eventually managed to become encamped on the home 22. Despite some muscular attempts to break through the rear guard defence of Josh Key, Jack Perkins, Tom Downing,  Kyl Thompson and Adam Percival prevailed. And with bludgeoning bursts at the other end from industrious Lewis Cox and skipper Scott Beard the home side easily weathered the storm.

The first half drew to a close with Morriston being reduced to 14 men after an indiscretion by their second row drawing a red card from the referee and the home side squandering a good try scoring opportunity but at 14. 0 the signs were positive.

With expectations high for the second half it was surprisingly the visitors who started the second half most strongly but it was short lived as the Birchgrove backs orchestrated by continued pack dominance and dynamic half back decisions started to put some exciting back play movements together.

An injury to wing Chris Weightman brought powerful  Ritchie Beynon in to the fray and in true “Super Sub” tradition within minutes of his entry and with his first touch of the ball he gratefully accepted a looped pass from Adam Percival to go over  in the corner for try No. 3 unconverted 19.0.

Birch now playing with unabashed confidence started to open up play and came close on a number of occasions before the archetypical provider Adam Percival once more was on hand to give his  commanding centre partner Nathanial Llewellyn sight of the line which he accepted in muscular fashion going over for the bonus try , unconverted , and a commanding 24.0 lead.

With the game over as a contest it has to be said that the final 10 minutes or so were pretty routine with Morriston to their credit doing everything within their power to claim a consolation and pride conserving try but it was not to be and a 24 -0 bonus point victory was a pretty good “Day at the Office” for Captain Scott Beard and his young disciples.

Early days yet but a very good start at the higher level, another testing game awaits at Ystradgynlais  next Friday evening  but one which will be approached with some degree of confidence.

Well done lads !
