BIRCH STAY ON TRACK AGAINST WEAKENED FERRY.

BIRCH STAY ON TRACK AGAINST WEAKENED FERRY.

All credit to Briton Ferry who gamely went ahead with this fixture today although being able to field only fourteen men from the outset. But the writing was on the wall despite some dogged resistance and Birchgrove dutifully delivered with an eight try 44 – 0 victory.

From inception this game struggled to raise high degrees of passion and enthusiasm as the passive scrum regime and the muddy  conditions thwarted many of Birchgrove’s early attempts to capitalise on their numerical supremacy.

Indeed by the time the first try came there had been three or four creditable opportunities just lost by the last pass going to ground or the slippery ball eluding the final recipient with the line beckoning. The scoreboard started to tick eventually though with Scott Beard taking a visiting defensive line out to put the home team on the offensive. An attacking move involving Nick Fisher, Beard, and Josh Key put Lee Harris in for the first try converted by Fisher 7 – 0.

The home side were now settling in to their task and put continuous pressure on the Ferry defence resulting in Leigh Di’iulio claiming the second try from a forward dominated attack on the line. 12 – 0 More was soon to follow as wave after wave of attack was launched on the besieged visitors. With Di’iulio and Garland now looking to attack from every phase of play it was only a matter of time before try number three was registered. Garland made the first break but was swallowed up by the Ferry defence but recovered to be involved a second time in a Josh Key, Tom Downing driven move to be available to drop over for try number three plus the conversion 19- 0 and one try short of the bonus at half time.

The second half was to bring more of the same as a slippery ball denied Nick Fisher an early score before Jordan Williams was also similarly denied. Rob Green though was next on the scoresheet finishing off another combination from the rampant forward ball handling display of Beard, Downing and Key 24. 0

A few new personnel in the shape of James Evans and Dale John did nothing to reduce the efficiency of the home side and it was the effervescent Green again who claimed the fifth try 29 – 0. With the resistance levels of the opposition now severely drained you sensed there were more tries to come and as if going through the motions try number six came with Nick Fisher on the end of another expansive move belying the conditions  to make it 34 – 0.

With the game well won Birchgrove continued to use the luxury of having an expansive bench as Conor Gallivan joined the fray together with the average age busting duo of Darren Poland and Jamie Rees before Dale John and a sidestepping spectacular from mobile prop Ryan Taylor completed the try count 44 – 0.

Another good effort and although assisted by the one man advantage another exercise in high tempo open rugby which has been the hallmark of the side this year even when the conditions have been poor. And well done Briton Ferry for sticking gallantly to the cause.

A re arranged game at Abercrave Wed 14th March 7. O clock kick off next up before a very big match at Swansea Uplands Sat 24th March
