I was unfortunately late getting to the game today but bearing in mind the conditions I was not surprised to hear that we had a 5 – 0 half time lead courtesy of a rolling maul try from Luke Myatt.
The second half shaped up to be more of the same and although the visitors were looking to bounce back it was the home side that quickly created a solid foothold in the away 22.
A succession of scrum penalties whilst encamped on the line was only going one way and there was relief as Lewis Cox drove over for a “thirty yarder” after immense forward pressure to increase the lead to 10 . 0.
To be fair to the Athletic, operating with 14 and for a period of time 13 men they continued to try and take the game to Birchgrove. But it was inevitable that as soon as the forward bridge head was created back in the opposition 22 it was only a matter of time before the lead was increased.
And so it was that after another plethora of scrums, penalties and away defensive heroics the referee had no option but to award a Penalty try to the home side and a winning score of 17 – 0 was very welcome on the day.
Well that’s it from me for 2021. A strange year and as we go in to 2022 we still operate under restrictions with only 3 more home games and 4 away to take us to the end of the Season in March. Our next scheduled game is Saturday 8th January Waunarlwydd at home.
A Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year to all my readers and everyone connected with the Club.
