TOUGH TEST AND A NARROW DEFEAT

Birchgrove suffered their first setback of the warm ups today losing narrowly to Division 1 West Felinfoel  13 . 14

With a squad depleted by holiday absences it was the home side though who took the lead after 15 minutes when a scything break by Adam Rowlands opened up the away defence. Matthew Edwards was swiftly up in support to go over for the first try, unconverted 5. 0.

Birch were to hold on to the lead until half time although had to withstand some intense pressure from the visitors who could have levelled on the stroke of half time but for a last minute handling error.

Felinfoel buoyed by a number of personnel changes were straight on the attack after the restart and the home defence was holding firm until a well worked move gave the visitors a deserved equalising try and with a successful conversion a 5. 7 lead.

The home side quickly cut back the deficit  with a  Matthew Edwards penalty 8.7 only to fall behind  again to a further converted try 8.14.Much to their credit though Birchgrove continued to battle away and combined some stout defence with well constructed counter attacks.

Reward came their way towards the latter end of the game as a successful line out provided a platform for a driving maul and scrum half Rob Scrine was able to claim the try. Matthew Edwards was just wide with the conversion and the game ended 13.14.

A very credible performance from the home side and further proof that although life may not be easy  at this higher level we are up for it and well capable of giving a good account of ourselves.

Well done lads and let’s go to the first league outing at Tondu next week full of confidence.
